![]() Last week we looked at setting goals and supporting them with robust and actionable plans that will see you taking your business forward in 2022. But it isn’t all on you to make these plans work so how do you bring your team on board? Good old communication, that’s how!
SHARE THE DIRECTION Imagine getting in a taxi and not telling the driver where you want to go. Unless the driver is a mind reader, you are going to stay stuck at your pickup point or leave yourself with no control as to the destination. It’s the same in your business – if you don’t communicate where you all should be going and how you are aiming to get there, all you will end up with is a lot of lost and frustrated employees working on whatever they think they should be, and a business that doesn’t meet it’s potential. It can be really easy to get your team onboard. Once you have completed your goal setting and subsequent strategic planning, you need to gather your team together and share the vision. You could choose to do this in a Town Hall style gathering or break it down into smaller groups where you outline specific goals relevant to their core strengths or business unit or any other format that best suits your business. Outline where you are going and how you want to get there, and voila, you have given your team the insight that will support the focus and engagement required to provide your business with the best opportunity to succeed. DON'T LET THE PLANS STAGNATE And don’t just make an announcement at the beginning of the year and expect the success to start flowing. Establish timeframes for follow up so your team has the chance to toot their horns when milestones are reached or alternatively, discuss changes or adjustments that might need to be made when they hit a challenge that is thwarting their ability to deliver the goods. Give your whole team ownership of the strategies, plans and goals as is relevant to their role and level of seniority so that everyone takes on the responsibility for accomplishing success. EVERYONE HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE PART OF THE SUCCESS OK, so it sounds simple and sometimes getting everybody to share the same vision can be a little bit like herding cats, but at their core, most people like to understand how they are contributing and that what they are doing is of value. People also love to feel a sense of achievement. This is really hard for people that work in roles that require them to turn up and do exactly the same as they did the day before, the week before, the month before, the year before…. If you share the destination and the planning that supports the goals, if they see the goals being reached – or adjusted as needs be – your employees will be better able to determine how and what they work on and in what way their contribution is making a difference. And for those people that are required to repeat the same tasks day in day out? When they know that what they do matters, the repetitive nature of their role has meaning and feels different. And don’t forget, you are not on your own – the team at HR Staff n’ Stuff is here to help you if you need guidance or support in establishing a communication process that will cut through and drive engagement with your people.
