WORK/LIFE BALANCE - IS IT REALLY THAT IMPORTANT?
Work life balance is one of those things we all talk about a lot. And we do so because it is so very important to your personal health as well as the health of your business. If you don’t factor some R&R into your life whilst trying to lead a business, you will run out of fuel – and it won’t be pretty.
Exhaustion is damaging enough on its own but it also leads to more major issues. It affects memory and mood. Fatigue impacts motivation and mental clarity. It decimates your immune system and will cause both niggling, minor illnesses as well as having the potential to leaving you susceptible to major health problems. And that’s just what it can do to you. We see time and again the effects on the employees in businesses where the business leader is not taking care of themselves. It can, and will, affect employee engagement, performance and retention – all which create a vicious cycle of you being even more exhausted because of these additional things to manage. But we get it, running your own business or being a senior leader involves increased workloads and responsibilities. But if you aren’t looking after yourself, you might get lucky by winning some quick sprints but how can you expect to run the marathon that is business leadership?

As to the life balance part, work out what feeds your soul. It doesn’t have to be extravagant – let’s face it, not everyone can afford to travel overseas every year. A weekend camping or hiring a house down the coast with friends or family every now and then may be all you need to reinvigorate yourself. Making sure you catch up with friends, volunteering, playing regular sport, reading a novel, gardening – it all depends on you and what makes you happy.
So do yourself a favour and make that promise to yourself as the new year starts to move into February. Plan time for YOU, and you will reap the benefits in both your business and personal lives!
